Ireland’s overnight rainout against Germany in their last match at Goldenacre meant they automatically qualified for the T20 World Cup European Regional Final currently taking place in Edinburgh. Ireland is now in first place with 9 points after the washout and previous victories against Italy, Denmark, Austria, and Jersey. They are five points ahead of the rest of the field, including the undefeated hosts, Scotland.
The 2024 T20 World Cup will be hosted in the West Indies and the United States, and there will be two available spots for qualifying teams in the qualifier. Scotland still need one more point from their remaining two matches to be mathematically certain of claiming the second spot, but their net run rate advantage over Italy, who are on two wins from four, is such that anything but a remarkable series of blowouts would also see Scotland through.
T20 World Cup
The home team will play Denmark in a truncated match at the Grange and then finish off the day against Ireland (if the weather cooperates). To qualify for the second position, you need just win one of the two events. If tomorrow’s game between Italy and Germany at the Grange is rained out, Italy will play Austria at Goldenacre in the afternoon. For them to come from behind and shock the hosts, Scotland would need to lose both games by large margins T20 World Cup.
